1. What is the Confidential Information Form (CIF)?
The CIF is a form required by a new court rule (UTCR 2.130) to keep items of "confidential personal information" (see below) out of family law case documents filed in court. The purpose is to give the court the information it needs for the case, but to keep certain items of information out of any section of the court file that is publicly available. The CIF with your confidential personal information is also not available for public view.
2. Who gets a copy of the CIF?
Each party to the case receives their own CIF. The other party also gets a copy unless there is an Order for Nondisclosure.
If there is an Order for Nondisclosure, the CIF is still filed in court, but the other party gets a separate form. To get an Order of Nondisclosure from the Child Support Program (CSP), you must provide a contact address so the other party can give you notice about issues in the case.
3. What information is considered "confidential personal information"?
Confidential personal information includes each party's:
- Social Security number
- Date of birth
- Telephone number
- Email address
- Residential or mailing address if required by law
- Employer’s name, address and telephone number
- Driver license number
Also included are the same items for a child of a party.
4. Will my residential or mailing address be in the CIF?
Possibly. There are laws that require an address for each party to be included in an order or judgment with a support provisions so your address is considered confidential information. To help protect your address from the public, the CSP will put this information in the CIF and not in the order or judgment.
The CSP will use the address where you receive child support papers in the CIF unless you provide a different address (in the same state where you live) to be used as your contact address. A copy of the CIF will go to the other party so it is important to provide us with a contact address if you don't want your residential or mailing address in the CIF.
